In an interview with The Sun-Herald, he said that the chance to play Adam was a role-reversal and part in Neighbours helped him become more level-headed. Stevenson chose to move from his native Melbourne to Sydney for filming. Tom Fletcher played by Roger Oakley debuted on-screen during the episode airing on 17 January 1988. Ruth Deller of television website Lowculture described patriarch Tom "One of the nicest dad characters in soap, ever".

At the end of the first episode, Tom and Pippa take in their sixth foster child Bobby Simpson . Nina Olivera , an old friend of Stacey's arrives in town and asks for her help in a new venture; a record company. She approaches Lance Smart , Martin Dibble and Marilyn Chambers and they form a band named Image. Morag Bellingham points out a contract clause that entitles Nina to whatever earnings she wants from the group.

Bobby and Frank visit Al in prison and Bobby confronts him about this revelation. It soon emerges that Morag Bellingham and Donald Fisher are Bobby's biological parents and Al and late his wife, Doris illegally adopted her. When Al is released, he returns to Summer Bay with his teenage daughter Sophie . Bobby is not pleased to see Al and warns everyone in town about him. Donald is unnerved to see Al, who begins blackmailing him over the death of Shane Wilson eight years earlier.
The triple bill episodes continued to receive low ratings until the Thursday, 9 May episodes, which improved with 617,000 viewers. The following week's triple bill saw a further rise with 627,000 viewers, while the episodes broadcast on 30 May received 638,000 viewers and ranked at 7th place for the evening. The 2020 season return saw a series low for a premiere with only 548,000 tuning in. The opening episode of the 2021 season saw a rating of 597,000. The 2021 season has seen an increase in ratings with most episodes attracting over 600,000.
Marilyn Chambers, played by Emily Symons, debuted on screen during the episode airing on 18 May 1989. Symons departed the serial in 1992 but returned in 1995 for another regular stint which lasted until 1999. Dannii Minogue originally auditioned for the role of Marilyn, but she was given the role of Emma Jackson and Emily Symons was cast as Marilyn instead. Holy Soap called her "bubbly" and a "Dizzy blonde beautician". Martha was reintroduced as part of the show's 30th anniversary celebrations.
Stevenson told writer Jason Herbison of Inside Soap that he enjoyed playing Adam again so much that he considered asking the producer for a full-time return. In Ireland, Home and Away debuted on Monday, 3 October as part of RTÉ's re-launch of RTÉ2 as Network 2 - their secondary channel. Episodes screened at 6.30pm and in September 1997, a daytime episode was added at 1.25pm on RTÉ One with the 6.30pm episode becoming the replay of the daytime broadcast. A repeat of the week's episodes is aired on Saturdays and Sundays on RTÉ2. Viewers in the Republic of Ireland are also able to catch up with episodes on the RTÉ Player.
Christopher is born to Tom and Pippa as their first biological child. When Christopher is two years old, Tom dies of a heart attack. Pippa marries Michael Ross the following year and he adopts Christopher. As Christopher grows he forms a close bond with his foster siblings and his adoptive sister, Sally . Christopher becomes friends with Duncan Stewart and they both get into scrapes together, including a situation where both explore a derelict building which is unstable following a recent earthquake.
However, Carly overhears a conversation between Barry, Tom and Pippa where Barry reveals he and Julie do not have enough time for her but cannot tell Lynn the truth. Several months later, Julie makes a televised appeal for Lynn to return home and she does. Lynn returns shortly after Pippa gives birth to a new-born son, Christopher (Ashleigh Bell-Weir).
Martha continues to maintain a home and studio in Marimbula, which causes tension between the couple when Alf wants Martha to sell up. Martha tells Roo that her home in Merimbula is the place she goes to heal when she suffers from BPD. She also tells Alf that it is her safety net and they make up.
